South to Lake Ohrid

Saturday morning we headed towards Lake Ohrid, a 2½ hour journey to the south. The countryside was beautiful. We climbed up into the mountains on narrow, winding roads and then back down to the valleys between the mountains. We drove through a lot of farmland, passing cows, horses, sheep and goats on the sides of the road. On the way, we saw horse-drawn wagons, cars carrying firewood on their roofs; a “National Geographic” style bent old woman with firewood on her back, another old lady in traditional dress – the types of things that you usually see only in magazines.
